Former Comelec Chief Andy Bautista Sought Refuge In America Only To Be Sued By U.S. Government!

MANILA, Philippines (The Adobo Chronicles, Manila Bureau) – He sought refuge in America to escape charges (and a Philippine Senate subpoena) of unexplained wealth only to find himself being sued by the U.S. Government.

The United States government has sued former Philippine elections chief Andres Bautista for money laundering and conspiracy after his estranged wife, Patricia Paz Bautista, flagged his alleged ill-gotten wealth worth P1 billion ($17.57 million).

Bautista’s alleged anomalous dealings were related to the Philippines’ presidential elections in 2016.

The Department of Homeland Security’s Homeland Security Investigations (HSI) filed the case against Bautista at the US District Court in the Southern District of Florida on Tuesday, September 19.

Will Bautista now voluntarily return to the Philippines to escape the U.S. lawsuit? Or will the Department of Homeland Security which oversees U.S. immigration deport him back?

Bautista’s honeymoon with the land of the free may soon come to an end.

Former NTF-ELCAC Officials Given A Slap On The Wrist By Ombudsman!

MANILA, Philippines (The Adobo Chronicles, Manila Bureau) – Former anti-communist task force officials Antonio Parlade Jr. and Lorraine Badoy were found guilty by the Ombudsman over the red-tagging of human rights lawyers and members of various progressive groups.

In a 17-page decision, Ombudsman Samuel Martires found Parlade and Badoy guilty of conduct prejudicial to the best interest of the service.

A penalty of “reprimand” imposed on the two former officials.

A slap on the wrist that diminishes fear of the anti-graft and corruption court among potential government crooks.

Manila Bars Closed During Bar Exams!

MANILA, Philippines (The Adobo Chronicles, Manila Bureau) – To ensure that all examinees for this year’s bar exams are sober, Manila Mayor Maria Sheilah “Honey” Lacuna-Pangan issued an executive order shutting down Manila bars before and during the exam dates.

The mayor hopes that by imposing a liquor ban, the passing rate for the aspiring lawyers will be higher this year.

In addition to the liquor ban, the E.O. also prohibits ambulatory vendors from selling their goods within 500 meters of the bar exam venues. This is to prevent scammers from selling to examinees cheat sheets disguised as siopao (Chinese buns) or turon (Filipino banana egg rolls).

Good thinking on the part of the Manila mayor!
