HOLLYWOOD DIRECTOR CAMERON CROWE APOLOGIZES, ANNOUNCES SEQUEL TO ‘ALOHA’

Oh
Oh

HOLLYWOOD, California (The Adobo Chronicles) – “Thank you so much for all the impassioned comments regarding the casting of the wonderful Emma Stone in the part of Allison Ng. I have heard your words and your disappointment, and I offer you a heart-felt apology to all who felt this was an odd or misguided casting choice.”

With those words, ‘Aloha’ director Cameron Crowe appealed to everyone to move on from their disappointment that the Ng character in his film wasn’t played by an Asian American actress.

To prove that his apology was sincere, Cameron announced that a sequel to ‘Aloha’ will start filming in Hawaii next month. It will be titled ‘Kilauea.’ The story of the sequel picks up from where ‘Aloha’ left off.

Brian Gilcrest (Bradley Cooper) and Allison Ng (Stone) get married and spend their honeymoon in Hawaii’s Big Island. On the second day of their honeymoon, a major eruption of Kilauea volcano happens, burying the entire resort in which the newly-weds were staying. Only three people in the resort manage to survive the extreme lava flow and fires that ensue: Gilcrest, Ng and Aloha Yamamoto, a half-Japanese and half-Hawaiian who was in Kilauea taking a short vacation from her job as a paramedic in Honolulu.

The events that follow lead to a complicated romantic triage among the film’s main characters.

Cameron expressed confidence that none of the casting controversy in ‘Aloha’ will haunt ‘Kilauea.’

The role of Yamamoto will be played by Korean American film and television actress Sandra Oh.

All’s well that ends well.

PHILIPPINES’ 2016 ELECTIONS WILL SEE NORA AUNOR VS. VILMA SANTOS

MANILA, Philippines (The Adobo Chronicles) – The 2016 Philippine presidential elections just got more interesting.

Vice President Jejomar Binay and Davao City Mayor Rodrigo Duterte  were both hoping to enlist Senator Grace Poe as their vice presidential running mate, but the popular and well-loved senator has all but rejected both offers.  She is contemplating on running for president herself.

In an effort to boost their quest for the presidency, Binay and Duterte have named their respective choice for a running mate. Duterte says that his choice for a VP running mate is Batangas Governor Vilma Santos while Binay has picked multi-awarded actress Nora Aunor.  Filipinos, of course, know that in their younger years, Santos and Aunor were rivals for the title of movie superstar. Santos  was a former movie star herself. It would be  déjà vu for both actresses if they decide to face each other in the election.

So how about Grace Poe, herself the daughter of two famous actors, the late Fernando Poe, Jr. (who ran unsuccessfully for president five years ago) and movie queen Susan Roces?

Interior Secretary Mar Roxas, the presumptive heir to partymate President NoyNoy Aquino wanted Poe to be his VP running mate but the latter has refused. So Roxas is left with no potential strong running mate.

Poe, on the other hand, is leaning towards drafting actor Bong Revilla, Jr. as her running mate.  Unfortunatelty, if Revilla would indeed be Poe’s VP choice, he has to campaign from inside his jail cell.  Revilla is currently incarcerated for charges of corruption .

Forget about ‘Dancing with the Stars.’ How about ‘Elections with the Stars?’ It’s really more fun in the Philippines!

HOLLYWOOD REDEFINES THE MEANING OF ‘ASIAN’

Swinton
Swinton

HOLLYWOOD, California (The Adobo Chronicles) –  First, Emma Stone was cast to play Allison Ng, a Hawaiian-Asian character in the newly-released film, ‘Aloha.’ Now, Tilda Swinton is about to play an Asian character in a comic film now in production.

The Oscar-winning actress is poised to star as the Ancient One in the upcoming Marvel superhero film Doctor Strange, despite the character’s originally written gender and ethnicity. The character is supposed to be a 500-year-old Tibetan sorcerer.

While Marvel’s consideration to cast a female as the male Sorcerer Supreme is being praised by some fans of the franchise, others are upset that a white actress has been cast as an Asian character.

In traditional Marvel storylines, the Ancient One was a peaceful male farmer of Asian descent, which Swinton is most certainly not.

Not everyone is offended or upset by this new Hollywood trend of casting white actors to play Asian characters.  Asian actors see this as an opportunity for them to be cast as white, blue-eyed and blonde characters.
