Bless Archbishop Villegas’ Heart, Because We Are Merciful!

Archbishop Socrates Villegas’ interpretation of the recent Vatican announcement authorizing blessings for same-sex couples raises questions about the Church’s stance on LGBTQ+ issues. While he asserts that these blessings are rooted in “mercy” rather than “sanctification,” his argument falls short in addressing the underlying theological implications.

Because ah, dear Archbishop, if blessings resulted in sanctification, then everyone who has ever been blessed by bishops and priests would all be living saints by now!

Villegas’ commentary may inadvertently undermine the potential positive effects of the Vatican’s move, perpetuating a conservative narrative that obstructs progress toward greater acceptance and understanding.

It seems Villegas may not fully embrace the biblical principle of “love your neighbor as yourself,” particularly in relation to the LGBTQ+ community. Villegas’ interpretation implies a selective application of the teachings of the Roman Catholic

Nevertheless, bless Archbishop Villegas’ heart. Because we are merciful!
