NEW YORK, New York (The Adobo Chronicles, New York Bureau) – The Miss Universe Organization has announced that it is renaming its international beauty pageant to “It Universe.”
The decision came after Netherlands crowned its first openly transgender woman queen to compete in this year’s Miss Universe. Rikkie Valerie Kolle, 22, made history after she won the competition on Sunday.
Kolle is the second openly transgender woman to compete in Miss Universe. In 2018, Angela Maria Ponce Camacho represented Spain in the pageant.
“We want to be all-inclusive and non-discriminatory and changing the pageant name is the right thing do it,” the organization told The Adobo Chronicles.
While there have only been two openly transgender women competing in the pageant, insiders said there could be other Miss U transgender women contestants in the past, adding: “they just weren’t public about .”
