PHILIPPINES DISQUALIFIED FROM BEAUTY PAGEANTS FOR THE NEXT TWO YEARS

UPDATED – The ban on Filipina candidates to International beauty competitions has been extended for another two years, following the recent crowning of two Filipinas as ‘Miss Globe’ (Ann Lorraine Colis)  and ‘Miss Earth’ (Angela Ong).

The following story was from 2013:

Bangkok, Thailand – After today’s fourth-place finish of Annalie Forbes, the Philippines’ representative to the Miss Grand International Beauty Pageant in Bangkok, Thailand, the  Association of Beauty Pageant Franchise Holders (ABPFH) has banned the Philippines from future international beauty competitions, citing “enormous advantage” by Filipina candidates in practically all pageants this year.

The  disqualification will be in effect for two years.

The Philippines holds the distinction of having won the title in all major beauty competitions like Miss Universe, Miss World and Miss International.  Additionally, every new international beauty competition has seen a Filipina winning the title or placing in the top 5.  Earlier this year, Mutya Datul won the 2013 Miss Supranational Pageant.

Forbes is the fourth Filipino to make it to the top 5 in competitions this year. Megan Young, of course, bagged the 2013 Miss World title this year, the first-ever for the Philippines.  Before Young, Evangeline Pascual reached the finals and was first runner-up in 1973 while Ruffa Gutierrez was second runner-up in 1993.

Ariella Arida, the country’s bet in the 2013 Miss Universe Pageant in Moscow, Russia, placed fourth.

Other Filipina beauties who have won international titles include Gloria Diaz and Margie Moran (Miss Universe) and Gemma Cruz, Mimilanie Marquez, Aurora Pijuan, and Precious Lara Quigaman (Miss International). Karla Henry won the Miss Earth title in 2008.

In 2010, 2011 and 2012, the Philippines’  Venus Raj, Shamcey Supsup and Janine Tugonon were all in the top 5 in the Miss Universe competition.

ABPFH said that it is time for the Philippines to give other countries the chance to win international beauty competitions, adding that “the world already knows how beautiful and talented Filipinas are.”

  1. In my home country, the United Kingdom. these beauty contest are banned because the UK is a politically correct country. In UK we consider women to be fully functioning normal human beings who should be treated with respect and dignity. To trot out women as sex objects in front of millions of drooling men is extremely disrespectful to women’s basic human right to equality with men. Maybe in 50 years’ time, the Philippines will be dragged, kicking and screaming if need be, into the modern world and these beauty contests will be consigned to the trash can of history.

  2. What sad reasoning. I don’t see how that justifies the decision to disqualify the Philippines. I doubt whatever rules they use has a provision for disqualifying a country because they win too often.

  3. Is this article for real??? Is this a joke that the panel from ABPFH have decided such ridiculous reason to ban beautiful Filipino contestant from competing for a title??? This a discrimination of any race that will have or have won several crown titles.!!!!! I have never heard of such absurd reason to ban my kapwa Pinay contestant having to compete. Judges and the media must have seen something quite unique and extra ordinary from each contestant that one lady is different from the other. This sound like a big protest is going to happen. Count me it. Stop excluding a country just because their beautiful women keep getting one of top title.

  5. If this is so, also impose this to Venezuela, USA and other Latin countries who never miss to place in the semi-finals and beyond. Then, beauty pageants wouldn’t be that much exciting.

  6. Really? sounds good but its really unfair, how about venezuela, india, and usa they have take home crowns from different international pageants several times and even consecutive years being in the top 5, this is not what pageants all about, its about who really deserves the crown and posses the quality of being ambassadress of goodwill,, tsk3x, mabuhay PILIPINAS

  7. That seems a strange reason for a ban! More likely, it was the use of false breasts or maybe most of the winners were ladyboys and the organisers of the pageants would be too embarrassed to admit that their rigorous vetting procedures were so compromised!

  8. Disqualification of a country with beauty and brain contestants in all the Beauty Pageants is not the answer to the problem of the organizers. The only solution to this is to ABOLISH the organizations. The Philippines, the PEARL of the orient as the word pearl implies is very proud to show to the entire world that we, FILIPINAS are BEAUTIFUL and SMART. And we will not let anyone to stop us in doing so.

  10. Well….I think it is not considerable that we should be banned on this pageant….all of our Filipino representatives for this really makes a lot of effort and hard work to win those title…

And I believe that its determination that matters…

  11. it’s not their fault to disqualified our representatives for the next two years, they’re just have “beauty and brains”, you can’t do that to our fellow Filipinas who where dreaming for international pageants. You have no right to do that! it’s not fair! If you want your representative take a title for the next year international pageant make sure that you’ll train them harder! Goodluck and God bless 🙂

  13. It’s not only Philippines are always in the finals, there are so some countries that keep winning, India had won 3 consecutive years in miss world… And some of the Mexican countries keeps winning. That not a reason to be banned the Philippines! Other country needs to work hard to meets the expectation of the pageants and how to win. This pageants are looking for a beauty, brain and attitude.

  15. yes, tama lang yan, parang exams. sa classroom na ang isang genius student exempted na sa test kasi magaling na. ganun lang yon, meaning mga pilipina magaganda talaga, kaya di na kailangan maki pag compete sa kagandahan.

  16. well cant help it if Philippines is always winning cause the truth is they are beautiful so what it’s not their fault if they win. They won it fair and square so let it be there’s no rules saying that the same country can’t win more then 2, 3, or 4 times in the roll THAT’S JUST NOT FAIR

  17. how come ABPFH doesn’t ban candidates from Venezuela, USA, Spain, Brazil who are also always the top 10 candidates in every pageants and sometimes bagging the crown just like Venezuela who have just recently won the Miss Universe title?

  21. on my own opinion, it’s just a wrong choice of word “DISQUALIFIED”, because it connotes negative impression. I would like to suggest to use the word ‘EXEMPTED”! so the effect would be a win win situation.

  22. Well, I don’t think we have to say bad things about it.
Evaluate your words before you throw it out. 😀 Philippines is still part of beauty pageants. Why it doesn’t applicable to USA and Venezuela? But giving others chance is a great privilege for us and I don’t think it’s gonna be a bad idea.

  26. its very flattering that world can see the hardworks and determination of every filipina competing to international beauty pageants,,every representative of each diff countries who participates has given the chance to prove themselves,,we cannot eradicate the fact that in any competition theres a winner and ofcourse sad to say theres a looser but we have to considerate the when we say international beauty pageant all countries in the world are open to participate aslong they follow all the rules and requirements given by the pageant,so even phils was trying very hard to atleast be on top 5 and its should not be a basis to disqualify a particular country for such reason..
