PHILIPPINES DISQUALIFIED FROM BEAUTY PAGEANTS FOR THE NEXT TWO YEARS

UPDATED – The ban on Filipina candidates to International beauty competitions has been extended for another two years, following the recent crowning of two Filipinas as ‘Miss Globe’ (Ann Lorraine Colis)  and ‘Miss Earth’ (Angela Ong).

The following story was from 2013:

Bangkok, Thailand – After today’s fourth-place finish of Annalie Forbes, the Philippines’ representative to the Miss Grand International Beauty Pageant in Bangkok, Thailand, the  Association of Beauty Pageant Franchise Holders (ABPFH) has banned the Philippines from future international beauty competitions, citing “enormous advantage” by Filipina candidates in practically all pageants this year.

The  disqualification will be in effect for two years.

The Philippines holds the distinction of having won the title in all major beauty competitions like Miss Universe, Miss World and Miss International.  Additionally, every new international beauty competition has seen a Filipina winning the title or placing in the top 5.  Earlier this year, Mutya Datul won the 2013 Miss Supranational Pageant.

Forbes is the fourth Filipino to make it to the top 5 in competitions this year. Megan Young, of course, bagged the 2013 Miss World title this year, the first-ever for the Philippines.  Before Young, Evangeline Pascual reached the finals and was first runner-up in 1973 while Ruffa Gutierrez was second runner-up in 1993.

Ariella Arida, the country’s bet in the 2013 Miss Universe Pageant in Moscow, Russia, placed fourth.

Other Filipina beauties who have won international titles include Gloria Diaz and Margie Moran (Miss Universe) and Gemma Cruz, Mimilanie Marquez, Aurora Pijuan, and Precious Lara Quigaman (Miss International). Karla Henry won the Miss Earth title in 2008.

In 2010, 2011 and 2012, the Philippines’  Venus Raj, Shamcey Supsup and Janine Tugonon were all in the top 5 in the Miss Universe competition.

ABPFH said that it is time for the Philippines to give other countries the chance to win international beauty competitions, adding that “the world already knows how beautiful and talented Filipinas are.”

  1. If the ABPFH is concerned about the overwhelming disadvantage, then what they should do is to implement a rule stating that all contestants must be a full/native Filipina. Half of the participants in these various pageants representing the Philippines are Fil-Ams.

  2. This is nonsense news. This is not true. Did the Philippines win a Miss Universe crown since Gloria Diaz? No, none, right? I can’t see the logic for this. Granting we have won 5 Miss Universe crowns in 5 consecutive years, it would still be foolish to ban our candidates from competing in a field where they excelled.

  3. If that’s your reason, well it also sounds like a compliment but you have to banned also the other countries who always on the winning slots. It’s not fair for the Philippines. But I guess, it’s up to the country how to screen & prepare for their future representatives that matters most. Be sure they will choose the best bet to represent.

  4. Does anyone else think that the actual reason for banning the Philippines from competing is that they will get too much sympathy in the next two years due to the recent typhoon disaster? I actually thought that’s what the article was going to be about after reading the title.

  6. It’s not fair for them to disqualify philippines. Is there really a ground for disqualifying such country with gorgeous and smart filipinas just because the country is always on the top 5 or even winning the title?

  8. Wow!!!!! What a joke!!!!!! Poor looser, stop complaining. You ca’nt blame Filipina, if they’re born ” beautiful & talented. “Hint’s”….be your self, don’t over act, thats the judges #1 they looking for, #2 is beauty. It’s worth nothing in the competition even most all of you ladies looks like a “Goddes of LOVE” with blue eyes & a blonde. What’s count is inner beauty, how you perform & represent your self as a real woman. Good Luck to all FILIPINA!!!!.

  10. How can you say you deserve to win an international title if you cannot speak English by yourself. They should implement or put as a requirements for a contestant that they should know how to speak English fluently as it is our global language.

    1. @ Sally Rose , What Filipinos do not know is that most countries do not speak English but speak their own language. They do not feel comfortable or confident in the English language as they do not use it on a daily basis. Filipinos are able to speak English because of the Americans who imposed English in schools. If the Americans didn’t take over, we would have been speaking Spanish like Latin America and would be speaking Spanish in international beauty pageants like Miss Universe and some people like you would be saying the same thing about Filipinos uncapable of Speaking English. English is not the only language in this world. Most countries give so much pride to their own language so you cannot compare them to Filipinos who do not give any pride to the Filipino language by speaking a language that is not even theirs. Look at how Filipinos speak ? They speak Filipino but tend to use English words in the middle of their sentence or look at their expressions. That doesn’t happen in other countries. When you are representing your country, it should include your language.

  11. Why they have to banned our country in this kind of competitions, Venezuala always won the said competition but never been banned. Don’t be bias. It’s not our fault that our representatives are competent enough to won those titles. Filipinas, no doubt BEAUTY AND BRAIN

  13. If this thread would be true. . .
Why not get Top 6 rather than only Top 5 if you guys want to give chances to other countries??
Also the contestants work hard for their qualities that let them win. It’s like banning the defending champion of any sports so that the others can be Champions?
This is such nasty method to “Give Chance” to others in a competition. . .

  14. This is a proof and a slap on their face that despite the presence of other contenders winning the title (with the help of their interpreters), a Filipina would still outsmart the other winners. What’s the use of the contest if it is depriving other contenders to join.

  15. So you’re saying Pinays are sandbagging all competitions… I could just pick a random pinay out on the street and she’ll, surely, win and all the rest need to be beauty pagent level just to even compete with her? OKAY!!!… but we get to be the judges for the next 10 years…and we get to wear beauty crowns while judging…that’s my final deal!

  17. We are still proud about this issue, although Philippines restricted to join the world beauty contest for two years. This means, FILIPINO WOMAN STILL THE WORLDS BRAIN & BEAUTY WINNER. I conclude, Whoever get the crown as Ms world, after all’ in the minds of the mass, she only won, because Philippines wasn’t joined the competition.

  18. OMG… is this for real? Then maybe they should cancel all the beauty pageants. It’s not our fault that we have such beautiful, talented and intelligent people in the Phillipines. Wake up WORLD…

  19. Such an unreliable story! What is the writer trying to prove? What about Venezuela? Doesn’t he know that Venezuela has won more beauty contests than any other countries. The Philippines doesn’t even comes close or near second to it.
I am a Filipino by blood, but I can say without a “flinch of the eye” that there are more beautiful women in South America than any other countries in the world and Philippines has got to accept that. It is only this year that Philippines has placed well in these beauty contests and they are bragging already.

Ha, ha, ha, ha….Why, don’t they stop a contestant or girls in each country who had a Plastic Surgery of any sorts ? Why, don’t they implement that all candidates should speak English or answer in English especially in Question & Answer portion ? ( No interpreter Allowed & will decide who are really the smartest & trully deserving candidates to win the TITLE (Crowned) ? I would like to see these rules in every International Pageant…if I may ?…..

    2. I am a Filipino. I am against to your opinion that the English language should be the requirement in joining the international pageant, it is an insult to people speaking their own tongue. We should be proud of what we speak of. Dapat nga mag tagalog ang rep natin sa anumang international pageant eh. Kaya di umaasenso pinas kasi di natin kayang dalhin ang sariling atin.
