The are only two recognized major American beauty pageants where state contestants vie for the national title of Miss America, and the other for the opportunity to represent U.S.A. in the Miss Universe Pageant.

This queen was crowned as Alabama’s official representative to the National American Miss (NAM) pageant. It is a pageant unlike any other. The pageant’s goal is to grow confidence and teach real world skills to American girls and women. It is a program based on the ‘foundational principle of fostering positive self-image by enhancing natural beauty within.’

So, it is not about swimsuits or evening gowns. It is about being “confidently beautiful” whatever one’s physical attributes are. Yes, even the obese can wear that crown, and wear it beautifully!
