Rivals Rappler And Adobo Chronicles Launch Subscriber Programs

3B2FFAA7-B486-4B72-984F-89787C9DF8A7.jpegMANILA, Philippines (The Adobo Chronicles, Manila Bureau) – In its desperate attempt to stop the bleeding from its declining viewership, Maria Ressa’s Rappler is launching what it is calling a “Plus” membership program that would supposedly give its readers access to exclusive, biased news content. What this subscription would cost is still subject to determination.

Not to be outdone, rival The Adobo Chronicles  is launching its own subscription program whereby viewers who sign up will receive news alerts — for free!  The news site is calling it the “Minus” membership program, hoping that it will lure Rappler Plus members to shift to to the AdoboChron free subscription.

Asked about the name “Minus” membership, the AdoboChron publisher said the concept is that every subscriber leaving Rappler (hence, the ‘minus’ sign) will result in an additional (“plus” sign) subscriber for AdobChron.

So it seems that Rappler’s program should be called “minus” and AdoboChron’s program, “plus.”

Mislatel, The Philippines’ Tired Telco

MANILA, Philippines (The Adobo Chronicles, Manila Bureau) – The Philippines’ third telecommunications player Mislatel is open to partnerships even with its competitors Globe Telecom and PLDT Inc, its spokesperson said Wednesday.

Such deals will not reduce competition but will instead boost the revenues of existing telcos, Mislatel’s spokesperson Atty. Adel Tamano told DZMM radio.

Partnerships could be in the form of sharing cell sites and domestic roaming, or the use of a partner’s network when its own network is not yet available, he said.

Mislatel is a consortium of businessman Dennis Uy’s Udenna Corp and Chelsea Logistics with state-owned China Telecom.

Reacting to the announcement, Filipinos are now calling Mislatel the tired Telco. They are sick and tired of same old Globe and PLDT.

”It’s a masquerade,” one disgruntled Internet subscriber said. “It’s Globe and PLDT masquerading as Mislatel.”
