MANILA, Philippines (The Adobo Chronicles) – Presidential candidate Senator Grace Poe said she was prepared to return to a private life and look after her family if she were to be unseated from the Senate.
Poe is facing a disqualification case before the Senate Electoral Tribunal (SET) because of allegations that she is not a natural-born Filipino citizen by virtue of being a foundling. A ruling against her could affect not only her Senate seat but her candidacy for president.
In 2001, Poe was naturalized as a citizen of the US after being petitioned by her husband who is a dual citizen.
In 2006, Poe took her Oath of Allegiance to the Republic of the Philippines for her to re-acquire her natural-born status. She also requested the same for her 3 children, which is allowed under the same law.
She told The Adobo Chronicles that she is prepared to once again become a private citizen if she loses her case. “There’s nothing I can do if they don’t want me to be a public servant,” she said.
Whether by “private citizen” she meant U.S. citizen or Filipino citizen, she did not elaborate.
