Hollywood, California (The Adobo Chronicles) – The 31st MTV Video Music Awards will be handed out this Sunday, August 24, in a televised ceremony at The Forum in Inglewood, California.

Award categories include: Video of the Year, Best New Artist, Best Lyric Video and Best Hip-Hop, among others.

This year, MTV is adding a new special category: Best Ice Bucket Challenge Video.  The decision to add the new category was prompted by the phenomenal success of the social media campaign benefiting the ALS Association.  Videos of people dousing themselves with a bucket of ice have become the runaway sensation of the summer.

During the live telecast, viewers will be asked to upload their favorite Ice Bucket Challenge videos on YouTube in real time.  Each upload will be shown in split screen during the entire ceremony.  During the last 15 minutes of the telecast, television viewers will vote on their favorite challenge video.  The video with the most number of votes will receive the special MTV trophy sculpted with ice.

Rapper Vanilla Ice will do the honors of announcing the winner.

UPDATING: The Adobo Chronicles has just learned that Patrick Stewart of Star Trek: Next Generation fame, is one of the leading nominees for this new award.  Here’s the nominated video:
