FILIPINO NEW YORKERS TO ANIMAL RIGHTS ACTIVISTS: ‘LEAVE OUR BALUT ALONE!’

NEW YORK CITY, New York – An animal rights activist in New York claims even balut has animal rights, and wants it off the menu at a local restaurant.

Activist Gabrielle Hardy is urging Maharlika, a popular Filipino restaurant in New York, to stop serving the Filipino delicacy.

Balut is a popular food item in the Philippines and has been for generations. It is a boiled duck embryo that’s eaten directly off its shell. It is considered food for the masses although rich people secretly devour balut in the privacy of their mansions.

Hardy created the online petition two weeks ago saying that balut is disgusting and it should be taken off Maharlika’s menu. She said people should not eat the unborn duck fetus.

By Friday morning, the petition gained 4,659 signatures out of its goal of 5,000 signatures.

Immediately after the ban-the-balut petition was posted online, a group of Filipino New Yorkers created and posted a counter online petition asking the animal rights activist to shut up and leave their balut alone. “Why are they picking on balut when they should be protesting against hotels and restaurants for serving steaks and lobsters, or even asking the government to outlaw McDonald’s hamburger or Kentucky Fried Chicken?” they said.

The Filipinos also urged Maharlika Restaurant not only to keep balut on their menu but also to put a picture of the balut on the cover of their menu books.

By Saturday noon, more than 50,000 people, mostly Filipinos, had signed the counter petition.

New York City is home to some 80,000 Filipinos, the fourth largest Asian group in the city. In the entire U.S., the Filipino population currently stands at 3.4 Million.

Don’t mess with Filipinos in New York, or anywhere.  And leave their balut alone!

JOLLIBEE TO PULL OUT OF THE U.S. MARKET; CHOWKING GAINING MOMENTUM

The Jollibee Mascot, then and now

SAN FRANCISCO, California (The Adobo Chronicles) – McDonald’s has all but conceded that it cannot compete with Jollibee in the Philippines.  The clown is simply unable to keep up with the popularity of that “fat, stupid happy bee” in the Asian island nation.

But the opposite is true in the U.S.

McDonald’s is outpacing Jollibee in all markets throughout the continental U.S., as well as in Alaska and Hawaii.

As a result, Jollibee has announced it is completely pulling out of the U.S. market.

In the last few years, many have noticed that the Jollibee mascot has become pale and has lost a lot of weight  (see photo) due to the declining number of customers and disappointing sales figures.

Jollibee Foods Corporation says it will relocate all of its U.S.-based mascots to the Philippines, where they are expected to recover quickly.

Meanwhile, another Philippines-based fast food restaurant is gaining momentum in the U.S.

downloadChowking USA is a quick service restaurant from the Philippines with a Chinese-influenced menu. Chowking, its mother brand, is one of the most recognized and well-loved fast food chains in the Philippines. The brand opened its first store in the U.S.  in 1995. Back then, the chain catered primarily to Filipino Americans, bringing them iconic menu items from the original Chowking.

Today, Chowking USA serves not just the Filipino community but the local US market as well by providing a delicious and satisfying Chinese fast food experience. It now has 19 locations in 3 states: California, Nevada, and Washington.

Goodbye Chicken Joy. Hello chow fun!

BALESIN ISLAND: PHILIPPINES EXCLUSIVE RESORT DISCRIMINATES AGAINST RICH PEOPLE

imageBALESIN ISLAND, Philippines (The Adobo Chronicles) – Described as a destination of unmatched natural beauty located off the eastern coast of Luzon in the Philippines, Balesin Island Club, Alphaland Corporation’s flagship project, is a 500-hectare tropical island paradise with 7.3 kilometers of pristine white-sand beaches. It is a members-only, private leisure getaway located 60 miles east of Manila that boasts of a clientele composed of the who’s who in politics, business, arts & entertainment, and the Philippines’ millionaires circle.

(The resort was the venue of the recent wedding of Senator Chiz Escudero and actress Heart Evangelista.)

What is little known about this exclusive resort is that it discriminates against the very customers that it is trying to attract: the rich people.

On Saturday, fashion designer and model Maggie Wilson-Consunji said that her mom was discriminated against by the resort. It happened during breakfast when the waiter refused to serve her mom the same delicious chicken adobo meal that her son Conner’s yaya (nanny) ordered. The waiter said the adobo was a ‘yaya meal’ and was not available to the rich clients of the resort.

Consunji  informs us she will file a formal complaint against the resort before the Philippine Commission on Human Rights on Monday for discriminating against rich people and for giving preferential treatment to nannies.

Here’s her story as posted on her Facebook page:
