MANILA, Philippines (The Adobo Chronicles, Manila Bureau) – Once a boxer, always a boxer. That’s what boxing champion and Philippine Senator Manny Pacquiao proved to the world today when he dealt fellow Senator Leila De Lima with a one-two-three punch.
At a Senate session, Pacquiao moved to declare the chairmanship of the Senate Committee on Justice vacant. That chairman is Senator Leila De Lima.
Pacquiao’s motion came immediately after Senator Alan Peter Cayetano delivered a privilege speech critical of how De Lima conducted last week’s Senate hearing on the alleged extra-judicial killings where she presented a lone witness claiming he was a member of the Davao Death Squad. In his testimony, the witness claimed that President Duterte, then mayor of Davao City, had participated in executing citizens.
Pacquiao’s motion caught the entire Senate by surprise, prompting the upper chamber to suspend its session and go into a secret caucus.
As of press time, the Filipino people are still waiting for the resumption of the live TV coverage of the Senate session.
Will De Lima survive the knock-out?
UPDATE: De Lima was ousted as chair of the Senate committee on justice, replaced by Senator Dick Gordon
