NORWAY POLITELY DECLINES PHILIPPINE GOVERNMENT’S OFFER OF FINANCIAL AID TO FILIPINO-NORWEGIAN OLYMPIC FIGURE SKATER

Oslo, Norway – The Philippines’ Aquino government, in an apparent move to focus attention away from its failure to provide financial help to its lone athlete in the Sochi Winter Olympics,  has offered some money to help with the expenses of Norway’s first Olympic figure skater in 50 years.  The skater, Anne Line Gjersem, is half Filipina, born to a Norwegian father and Filipina mother. Gjersem’s mother, Perlita Bangug, hails from Ilagan, Isabela in Northern Philippines.  Anne Line has a twin sister who is also a figure skater.

The Aquino administration has come under fire after it was revealed that it had not provided a single penny to help with the expenses of the Philippines’ and Southeast Asia’s first Olympic figure skater, Michael Christian Martinez.  Presidential spokesperson Herminio Coloma has been on the defensive about Martinez’s case, telling reporters that budget allocation, competitive edge in sports, and lately, spam mail, were among the reasons that Malacañang (the Philippine presidential palace) failed to support Martinez’s Olympic quest.

In a diplomatic cable sent to the Oslo government, President NoyNoy Aquino said: “On behalf of the proud Filipino people, please accept our offer of PH 44,000 Pesos to go towards the Olympic expenses of Anne Line Gjersem who is of Filipino heritage.  We will be cheering for Gjersem when she takes to the ice this week.”   (PH 44,000 pesos is roughly U.S. $1,000).

Norway sent Aquino an immediate cable reply, saying “Thanks, but no thanks.”image13.jpg

Gjersem is the 15th skater to perform at Wednesday’s Figure Skating Ladies’ short program.

(Update: Gjersem made it to the finals and finished 23rd out of 24 skaters in the free skates.)

  1. It is not surprising if most Filipinos would believe such absurd articles because the Philippine government have actually done absurd decisions a lot of times before.

    1. I didn’t know that this was a satirical news, nor others knew. Otherwise we wouldn’t have reactions like those.
And if I only knew it and have read the reactions of those who doesn’t, I will never criticize their freedom of expressions the way you did. But instead, I will let them know what I know in a polite way and not in a sarcastic way just because I knew something that others don’t.

      1. Hmm.. fair point. Hehe. I’m truly sorry if I sounded judgmental and mean, it’s just frustrating to see how gullible we Filipinos can be. We need to stop believing everything we read on the net, no matter how well it is written. Kaya tayo madalas napapahamak eh. Damdamin palagi ang pinapairal. Di na masyado pinapractice ang critical thinking…

    2. And the one you mentioned who said “fill with sense and intelligence” she was actually referring about “THE resources of money and riches of Norway, ” and NOT about this satirical news. Mr. Commentator, when you said “HAY Naku PILIPINAS” ,”OA” you are only talking about what you are, and shows HOW you think that makes you what you are. Mmmmm.. tsk tsk.. let’s just cheer for the both talented athletes. 😉

  8. if aquino offered that amount, it would be more of an insult, parang ganun lang kamura ang gagastusin sa figure skating to think that SM helped our boy Micheal with an amount of 150, 000 pesos parang kumbaga binigyan mo lang ng pangmeryenda.
