Sochi, Russia – When contingents from participating nations march in for the opening ceremonies of the 2014 Winter Olympics on February 7 in Sochi, Russia, spectators will not see the athletes from Scotland, Fiji and American Samoa.
The reason? Vladimir Putin’s government has banned male athletes from wearing skirts in public. The ban is consistent with Russia’s controversial law prohibiting any public display of homosexuality. 
The Scottish olympians were supposed to wear kilts, traditional attire for men and boys in Scotland, while the Fijians and Samoans were to wear the traditional lava lava, a male version of the female sarong. Fiji and American Samoa are among the few tropical nations that send a delegation to the quadrennial winter competitions.
“These attires closely resemble women’s skirts, and for men to be wearing women’s clothing in public is inconsistent with Russian law,” Putin said in a press conference yesterday at The Kremlin.

I think Putin protest too much….I didn’t want to see his video on horseback with NO SHIRT but i tolerated it b/c frankly I thought it was hilarious. Here’s a grown man strutting like a Bannie rooster (around other men) what he thinks is hot stuff but in reality is a sad representation of a narcissistic megalomaniac that has obviously lost touch with reality not to mention needs to fire his (yes man) PR people. No, his new statutes are clearly a show of power over a demon he’s probably been battling within himself for most of his life. He fears what he desires. Sarah, Scotland do not attend the Olympics as a Country, they are part of the Great Britain Team. Scotland attend the Commonwealth Games as a separate entity. I do enough about anything to know satire and to know when people do not know what they are talking about.

This is ridiculous. The Olympic are not about RUSSIA nor are they Russian. It is about the celebration of sports. So the laws of dress code for each country represented should reflect that countries laws and dress code, not the hosting country. Even as a host for a worldwide celebration Russia tries to remain the dictator of all, and in so doing undermines the very purpose of the Olympics. How sad that this is allowed to occur, especially in an era where intelligence, education and common sense should work together.

The whole purpose of the Olympics is that we are One World and we respect each other’s differences as we share our similarities. This is a complete disrespect to other cultures which goes against everything the Olympics has come to symbolize. The Olympic Village is a WORLD VILLAGE – it does not abide by Russian law but INTERNATIONAL LAW.

Respecting them is all fine and good, but Olympics is supposed to educate and bring together ALL DIFFERENT CULTURES and ways of life.
